THE ORIGINS - |
|
Originally called Interamnia
Praetuttiorum, it was conquered by the Romans in the III century and then became roman municipium and
colony. In 410 it was destroyed by Alarico’s Goths and it was rebuilt between the VI and XII cent. under the name of
Aprutinum. In the XII cent. The town became part of the Ducato of Spoleto under the name of
Teramum. Under William I’ reign Teramum was upset by the fights between the Melatinis and Valles
families. Up to 1770 it was a free town, but after this year it had to fight for its
independence. A great tribute was given by the people from Teramo to the many battles for the italian independence (the town was during the II World War an important centre for the Abruzzo’s
patriotism).
