- THE ORIGINS - 

The town dates back to the neolithic period, as the Paialonga hut (found in 1986) witnesses. Nereto belonged to the the church, then to the Spanish and in 1376 was bought by Ascoli. In 1460 Alessandro Sforza occupied the town, but the same year the town was given back to Ascoli. In 1527, the year of the plague, the San Rocco church was built.

- NERETO NOWADAYS  -

Nereto is a flourishing commercial end industrial town, located at the centre of the Val Vibrata. Among the smallest towns in Italy, it is particularly dynamic and modern, and it is an ideal centre for relaxing. During the year there are many cultural and culinary manifestations.

- WHAT TO SEE -

S. Martino church
Located at the border of the town, the church dates back to the first years of XII century. On its façade it is possible to admire an ancient bassorilievo (showing S.Martino on horseback while he is giving his cloak to a pooor man) which is now the town’s coat of arms.

Parish church
Made of bricks, it was built where there was the ancient church. It has three naves and there are ancient 1700 decorations among which the Madonna della Consolazione statue, two painted wooden statues, a San Martino bust, a painting showing S.Stefano lapidation and a 1800 organ.

Santa Maria of the suffrage
Dating back to 1676, the church is nowadays the product of a 1800 restructuration. Inside it there are some ancient paintings of the Madonne of the Suffrage and a wooden cross.

Old fountain
Built in 1881 and located in the east part of the town, the Old Fountain was a drinking-through and a wash-tub, and it presents three niches decorated with great masks.
