THE ORIGINS- |
|
The town has prehistorical origins and still there are roman remains. Its greatest period was during the Reinassance. Conquered by several reigns, it was the residence of the Nannos, the Serras and the Acquavivas (who ruled the area from 1393 to 1760).

CONTROGUERRA NOWADAYS - |
|
Placed over a hill, with 1800 and modern buildings, Controguerra is surrounded by the country, rich in vineyards and corn coltivations. Situated in a panoramic position, the town has architectonic works of gret value, such as the Ducal Palace (of late-medieval origins). Touristic resort, in summer it offers every kind of manifestations among which its famous festival where it is possible to try the taste of the local traditional cooking.

WHAT TO SEE - |

Ducal Palace
The Ducal Palace is located on the higher part of the town. It's a brick building with a square tower. The Acquavivas probably lived in there. Restaurated more times, its most ancient structures could date back to the Middle
Ages.

Madonna delle Grazie church
The church, located just outside the town walls, was firstly named S. Maria delle Grazie during a pastoral visit in 1574. The building, restructured several times, is now as it was in 1810. The brick front is characterized by double pilasters at the entrance and by a central tympanum on the architrave. Inside the church there's a wooden altar from the late baroque, with a picture of a blessing Father God. In the middle of the altar ther is an altorilievo showing the Madonna with the Child (probably from the XIX
century).

S. Benedetto Abata church
Founded after 1609 as San Benedetto e San Pietro church, the place has nowadays a XIX century aspect. In the middle of the stone main door there is the Controguerra coat of arms. Inside it there are two fine paintings from 1600, representing the Madonna del Rosario and l'Ultima
Cena.

Remains
In the town hall there are several archeological remains, a small minter containing Carlo D'Angio's dies, and a woman bust from the first years of the XIX century.
